People think expensive machines are more reliable. Actually, well-maintained machines are more reliable. The causation runs the other way.
Our fleet of three CA2500 single-drum rollers—each averaging 1,200 hours per year—have been solid. The biggest issue? A cracked radiator hose on one unit. Cost $85 and 30 minutes to fix. Our older CP1200 pneumatic tire roller needed a new tire sensor ($220) and a controller software update ($450 at the dealer). Both minor.
But I've got a friend at another company who bought a used Dynapac with no service history, ran it hard for six months, and blew the hydraulic pump. Is that Dynapac's fault? I'd argue no—that's on the prior owner and the buyer who didn't inspect it.

That's perfect for testing the waters. Rent a CC4200 combo roller for a season, track your productivity, see if the dual-amplitude system actually helps on your jobs.
Don't buy new unless you've got a consistent 500+ hours per year lined up. Otherwise, look for a late-model used machine with 1,500-2,500 hours and a complete service record. That's the sweet spot for value.
And the can crusher attachment everyone mentions? Rarely needed for small jobs unless you're doing extensive utility work. Save that purchase until you've got a specific need.
5. What about dealer support? Does every dealer suck?
Not all, but you have to do your homework. The Dynapac dealer locator on their site is a starting point, not the final answer.
I've worked with three different dealers: one in the Northeast, one in the Midwest, one in the Southeast. Night and day difference.
The Midwest dealership has a dedicated parts counter for Dynapac, same-day pickup for in-stock items, and a service tech who actually answers his phone. The Northeast dealer? They had my machine for 11 days to fix a $400 issue. The service advisor blamed the "holiday schedule." I blamed their poor planning.
Non-negotiable for me: call the service department before you buy. Ask them how long a standard hydraulic hose replacement takes. If they can't give a straight answer, that's a red flag.
6. Do I need the high-density package? (Putting it all together)
Most buyers focus on drum width and operating weight and completely miss the density settings, vibration control options, and after-sale support costs that can add 30-50% to the total.
If you're doing interstate highway work, yes—the high-density package pays for itself in fewer passes. For parking lots and subdivisions? You're probably fine without it.
Same logic applies to the paddle attachment. Great for clay and cohesive soils. Overkill for sandy gravel or recycled asphalt. Don't buy for potential—buy for current needs.
The Dynapac construction equipment brand is solid. But no piece of equipment is a magic wand. Your operator, maintenance schedule, and dealer relationship matter as much as the brand name on the frame.
Buy smart. Maintain diligently. Treat your dealer like a partner, not a vendor. That's the real formula.
